Restaurants
Let’s be honest, there’s not a ton to choose from these days. Devastating floods and other challenges have taken their toll on Ludlow and the surrounding towns. Although we always want to support our local community, going out to eat with a large party can be challenging. Here are some of our tried & true recommendations!
❋ Smokin’ Bowls in Chester (right on the way if coming off I91). You can purchase large mason jars full of soups or chilis that are great to supplement all the nonsense you lugged from home and Costco.
❋ The HatcheryAMAZING but the weekends will be crowded. The owners are wonderful and the food is tremendous. The pickup window is a great way to get a gigantic cinnamon bun. If you aren’t skiing, wait until the crowds die down and go in for a boozy hot apple cider or bloody mary with your lunch.
❋ Singleton’s in ProctorsvilleFor great lunch sandwiches to go it might be worth the extra drive. It’s also a deli, a grocery store, a liquor store and there’s a small section with clothes & shoes. I would ruin it by telling you the signage out front; go see it for yourself.
❋ The Killarney Irish PubReally can’t go wrong with the atmosphere there. The beer battered tacos are the surprise and the Shepherds pie is 2 meals for moi.
❋ The Rustic RoosterWant to head out of town? It’s GREAT. It’s SMALL. It is perfect for groups up to 8 max and if at all possible show up right when it opens.
❋ MOJO’s CaféThe food NEVER disappoints. (picture my best Homer Simpson drool)
❋ Village Pizza Reminds me of the kind of pie I would get in my hometown in northern Connecticut. It’s exactly what I want on the rare occasion I want pizzas or subs. In real life I’m a girl that wants thin crust pizza from New Haven but when in rome……
❋ Slingers I did recently walk over to Slingers (the old Gamebird) and had a really good smash burger. Still has some arcade games and a small food menu.
Swimming & Tubing
❋ Camp Plymouth State Park at Echo Lakea large beach with swimming area, picnicking and barbeque facilities, playscapes, a sand volleyball court, a concession stand, walking trails and boat rentals.
❋ Lake Rescue and Pauline LakeAlthough no public swimming beaches exist, the lake does have a state maintained public fishing access point where boats can be launched. A "horseshoe" dam separates the two lakes over which passes the well known and much photographed Red Bridge. Lake Rescue is north of Red Bridge and power boats (but not jet skis) are permitted on the lake. Pauline Lake is to the south of Red Bridge and only non-motorized propelled craft are allowed.
❋ Ludlow Town Reservoir - West Hill Recreation Area You can swim, picnic or take a nice walk at the reservoir. My mom and I like to bring beach chairs and cocktails and have happy hour there ;-)
❋ Other Swimming❋ Buttermilk FallsNice place to walk around, jump in some freezing waterfall runoff. It’s not an easy place to get around for the really young or the really old. The entrance is almost across from Jackson Gore on 103…road may actually be called Buttermilk but there is a sign now pointing you in the right direction.
❋ River Tubing
Other Activities
❋ Billings Farms & MuseumWorking dairy farm with cows, sheep, horses, oxen and family centered activities.
❋ Okemo Valley Golf CourseThe new 18-hole championship Okemo Valley Golf Course facility is open. The 6,600-yard long, par-70 golf course is Vermont’s first Heathland-style links course and is unlike any other resort course in New England.
